Talking in Class

From Irene Vald:

"Talkative students might be giving you a clue as to how they learn best - interpersonally. You can cut down on the off-task chatting by allowing on-task chatting. Some examples are, 'Turn to your neighbor and tell them two words that can be used as nouns and verbs' or 'Think, pair and share two reasons why Harry Potter decided to defy school rules.' Whatever question you're going to ask the whole class will work in this format. Have a few pairs share their answer with the whole class. The class can use a silent signal for agreement or disagreement. This can also be used for groups that dislike talking in front of the class. They get a chance to share and rehearse their answers before speaking in front of the group."
